Story
As many of you know I am a proud volunteer member of the Board of Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda.
I first became aware of Sacred Heart Mission when I moved to St Kilda in 1989. St Kilda was a different place then, Grey St and surrounding roads were pretty run down and rooming houses dotted the area. The rooming houses were pretty grim, residents were locked out during the day so had nowhere to call home. The Mission, through the dining hall, became their home base providing food, shelter, companionship and support.
Since 1989 the Mission has grown and now, in addition to providing food and a safe space, it also provides a permanent home for many through the aged care hostels and the rooming house project. The Mission is also working to permanently end the homelessness for the most disadvantaged members of our community through a ground breaking project, Journey to Social Inclusion.
Every day I witness the work of the Sacred Heart, the Women’s House, Aged Care Hostels, Clinic and Dining hall are all within 100 paces from my front door. I see the positive impact they are having on people’s lives and I commend Sacred Heart Mission to you as an organization that is deserving of your support.
By making a one off donation to Sacred Heart Mission during volunteer week, you are recognising the magnificent contribution our volunteers make every day.
To give you an idea of what it costs to run some of our programs:
• $15.20 will cover the cost of four meals served in our dining hall
• A visit to our Hands on Health Clinic (where people can access allied health professionals who volunteer their time with us) costs the Mission $23
• For every visit to the Women’s House, it costs the Mission around $50

Sacred Heart Mission
Every day of the year, Sacred Heart Mission assists hundreds of people who are experiencing homelessness or disadvantage to find shelter, food, care and support.
Sacred Heart Mission’s St Kilda Dining Hall provides a safe, welcoming space to share a meal. A place where people are not judged, and where they can reconnect with their community. Everyone is welcome at our table. We use a meal and the positive environment we foster to encourage people to seek support on their own terms.
The pandemic has made us change our dine-in service to takeaway only. But we are still focused on providing the much needed support, which comes with every meal.
A simple meal is the first step in improving lives, everyone is welcome at our table. It helps us build trust and a relationship with someone, which can:
- Connect them back into their community;
- Break down the barriers standing in their way when seeking help;
- Support them in their recovery after experiencing significant trauma;
- Start them on the path out of homelessness, for good.
Your support today will ensure the people we work with in our community can live the life that is defined by them.
